Mayfest this Saturday

Wednesday, April 28, 2010

By By Chandler Myers
This weekend marks a huge weekend for the City of Atmore as the Chamber holds the 37th annual Mayfest at Tom Byrne Park.
There is sure to be a large crowd to assemble at the event with thousands of spectators expected to be on hand.
One sports related event will be the “Battle of the Bench” that is sponsored by Ulitmate Fitness.
Last year, several participants gave it their all to walk away with a nice plaque.
This year there could be more and better competition for the crowd to see.
Another event, whichtakes place next to Mayfest is the opening day ceremonies for Cal Ripken Baseball.
The Major and Minor League teams will take the field for the first time and begin league action in the quest for a league championship.
Cal Ripken has to be one of the more fun things that as a sports editor I get to witness.
It’s always fun to see the teams go at it for a few weeks because rivalries develop and the standings are always tight.
Opening day should prove to be really fun to because all of the players are excited and ready to get on the field.
Hopefully, this season is full of as much fun and excitement as the past two years that I have covered it.
The coaches and players deserve a lot of thanks for the work they take part in to prepare for the season to give parents and fans the best competition possible.
Murry Johnson also deserves a lot of praise for the amount of work he has put in for Cal Ripken over the past several seasons.
He puts a lot of effort into making sure the season is a good one, and as far as I have seen he has a done a good job.

Renovations ongoing at Tom Byrne Pool

Wednesday, April 28, 2010

By By Chandler Myers
Renovations on the Tom Byrne Park Pool are ongoing with the work to be completed in time for the pool’s scheduled opening day on June 1.
The work, which was approved by the Atmore City Council on March 22, was awarded to Cox Pool Services with a bid of $75, 850.
In an interview after the approval, Atmore Mayor Howard Shell spoke on how badly the work has been needed, and added work on the pool at Houston Avery Park could come as well.
The need for the work came from several problems the employees had at the pool with keeping water clean.
Pool Manager Betty Warren said in March that the repairs are to be made on the return lines, which have been leaking and also the inside of the pool.
As of now, Cox Pool Services is preparing to start plastering on the pool.
Melvin Middleton said the work on the pool has been going as well as planned.
With the work going smoothly, the pool is expected to open on its set start date, which is the day after Memorial Day.
Middleton said that there was hope the work would be done by the beginning of next month.
The work being done has drawn praise from those that oversee the pool.
Warren said she has not been able to see the work, but heard that it looks good.

Letter to the Editor

Unemployment big problem in Alabama
We have a big problem in Alabama: 11 percent of people in our state are unemployed. For the first time in a very long time, hard working people who have skills and a desire to work are not able to find gainful employment to support themselves and their families.
Last week, Dr. Robert Bentley, a member of the State House of Representatives in Tuscaloosa and a candidate for governor, took a step toward solving both problems. He introduced the Re-employment Act of 2010, which will put thousands of unemployed Alabamians back to work by providing tax deductions to companies who hire people who are currently unemployed.
He got every Republican and every Democrat to put partisanship aside and pass this bill with 100% support of members of both parties. That is incredible.
We need leaders like Bentley who can identify the real problems facing us and come up with solutions. But, we also need people who can get politicians to look past partisan politics and do what is right for the people who elected them. Bentley has proven he can take a good idea and get both parties to sign on in support of it. That is a very rare quality and that is certainly a quality that would make him an outstanding Governor.
