Area under winter weather advisory

Escambia County is under a winter weather advisory, according to the National Weather Service in Mobile.

The advisory will be in effect from 6 p.m. Wednesday to 6 p.m. Thursday.

Sleet has already begun falling in Atmore as of 4:30 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service, sleet will continue to fall overnight and could change to freezing rain as the night progresses.

The precipitation could cause a “moderate glaze accrual,” especially on bridges and overpasses, the NWS advisory states.

The most intense precipitation rates are expected around sunrise and will continue through Thursday afternoon.

The precipitation is expected to be north of a line from Perkinston, Miss., to Citronelle, Appleton, Andalusia and Brantley.
