Family and friends are mourning the death of an area man killed in the line of duty with a military operation in Afghanistan.

Marine Lance Cpl. Travis Nelson, the son of Scott and Becky Nelson, formerly of Brewton, was reportedly killed in action earlier this week. Details surrounding his death have not been released to media or to the family as of Friday morning. Nelson’s grandmother, Louise Nelson, is a resident of East Brewton.

Nelson had been deployed to Afghanistan for about a month and was reportedly on patrol with his unit when he was killed.

Nelson, who resided in the Bratt, Fla., community is a 2010 graduate of Pace High School and was reportedly engaged to his high school sweetheart.

Family members are expected to make a trip to Dover, Del., over the weekend to receive Nelson’s body when it arrives on military aircraft.
