Habitat for Humanity hard at work in Escambia County

Due to inclement weather and material delays, the Habitat for Humanity house on Mayo Street in East Brewton will not be ready for the family to move in until toward the middle of January.

The house framing joists were delayed and volunteers had to adjust their time-table to fit the material’s arrival.

“We have had several delays due to weather,” said Alecia Glaize, director of the Habitat for Humanity for Escambia County. “The volunteers have really done a great job, but right now we are waiting for the sheet rock mud to dry. They have been putting the sheet rock up, but the mudding has to dry and be sanded down and mudded again. We are hoping to get the Thompson family in by the middle of January and have a dedication on Jan. 15, 2011. They have been very understanding about not being in the house by Christmas as that was our goal.”

Glaize said that the Thompsons have gotten several family members to volunteer on the project. Janice Thompson knows how to paint and she is planning on doing some of the painting as soon as she can.

The house on Mayo Street is a two bedroom-one bathhouse and includes a ‘safe’ room in case of bad weather or other emergencies.

According to Glaize, the safe room is detached from the rest of the house but under the same roofline. The room is eight by eight feet in size, made of steel. and bolted to the foundation of the house.

“We have counted on ReStore for several things for the house,” Glaize said. “Not only for funding, but for kitchen and bathroom cabinets, and all the flooring. The kitchen and bath will have tile while the rest of the house will have hardwood flooring.”

One thing for sure, while Bobby and Janice Thompson and their grandson, Keiffer Nelson, may have to wait a couple of more weeks before they get in, but when they do make the move, it will be even sweeter.
