Woman killed in Wednesday afternoon car crashPublished 2:23pm Wednesday, June 27, 2012
A two-vehicle accident claimed the life of an Atmore woman Wednesday afternoon when the pick-up truck she was a passenger in collided head on with another vehicle on Bell Creek Road, approximately seven miles northwest of Atmore.
Dottie Salter Boutwell, 73, was killed when the 2005 Chevrolet Colorado she was riding in was struck by a 1995 Chevrolet Silverado driven by James E Popejoy, 39, of Atmore.
According to a release by the Alabama State Trooper’s Office, Boutwell was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident and was pronounced dead on the scene.
James Maron Harrelson, 55, of Atmore, and the driver of the vehicle Boutwell was a passenger in, was injured and transported to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Fla. Popejoy also was injured and transported to Baptist Medical Center in Pensacola.
According to an officer aiding troopers on the scene Wednesday, Popejoy may have been traveling over the speed limit on the narrow dirt road, contributing to the collision and causing his truck to flip over top of the vehicle Harrelson and Boutwell were traveling in. Unconfirmed reports from the scene Wednesday indicated Popejoy may have suffered from two broken legs in addition to other possible injuries.
