Brent Antwon Simpson, 23, was charged with felony assault on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, reckless endangerment and fleeing and attempting to elude after a complaint of a fight and gunshots fired on Adams street was called into the Atmore Police Department.

Investigator Robby Williams said the caller told police the suspect was leaving the scene in a white car with a paper dealership tag. Williams said officers spotted the vehicle near Sunset Drive and Martin Luther King Avenue, but Simpson refused to stop. Officers pursued the vehicle at low speeds, never exceeding 40 mph, before Simpson stopped at a residence on Mobile Street.

Williams said Simpson exited the vehicle and physically assaulted an officer attempting to take him into custody. Simpson was subsequently subdued and arrested.

Simpson was transported to the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton, where he was awaiting a bond hearing as of Tuesday afternoon.

The child was turned over to family members.
