Melissa Baker is taken into custody by Sheriff's deputies outside of her Everette Street Apartment Thursday afternoon.

A report of possible child abuse led to the arrest of an Atmore woman on drug charges Thursday afternoon on Everette Street.

Escambia County Sheriff’s deputies responded to an apartment located at 411 Everette Street at approximately 3 p.m. after an anonymous caller reported an 8-year-old girl being abused in the home by her mother, 42-year-old Melissa Baker.

Sheriff’s Deputy Greg Forbes said there did not appear to be signs of physical abuse, however an investigation by the Sheriff’s department and the Department of Human Resources relating to child neglect and truancy issues is still underway.

While on the scene, Forbes said Baker had admitted to having illegal narcotics in the home and deputies uncovered around 15 Xanax pills she had obtained illegally.

Baker was charged with possession of a controlled substance without a prescription. She was transported to the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton.

The minor was released into the custody of family members.
