Council to explore districts

With the 2012 election season behind them, the new Atmore City Council is already taking steps to ensure the next election will run smoothly four years from now. During Tuesday’s city council meeting, council members approved an agreement with Diane Burnett and Chris Miller, members of the South Alabama Regional Planning Commission, to carry out a special survey that will explore how information gathered during the 2010 census might impact district lines in Atmore.

Burnett said there are several population factors that dictate how districts are made up, adding she will be looking over the information in order to determine what, if any, changes should be made before the 2016 election.

• Approved the appointment of Joyce Gulley to the Housing Authority in order to fill the spot vacated by Mary Ivery.

• Approved the appointment of District 5 City Councilman Chris Harrison to the Planning Commission.

• Approved the use of Tom Byrne Park for the Relay For Life event to be held their Friday, April 26, 2013.

• Approved ordinance 09-2012, a non-exclusive franchise agreement with the company Southern Lights, who will be exploring the possibility of fiber optic cables being run through town as far as a tower located on Grubbs Street and a cell tower located in Rivercane.
