Senior appreciation day fills local church

Senior citizens were honored Saturday night during a special service at Deliverence Ministry of Jesus Christ.

Five years ago Dr. Bernard Bishop and his wife Felecia decided they wanted to do more to give back to the Atmore community. From that want, Senior Appreciation Day was born.

The Bishops, who also coordinate the annual events Stomp the Yard and Unity in the Community, said they felt like they were making a difference in the lives of younger Atmore residents, but not honoring the many senior citizens who call Atmore home.

“We just looked around after one of the Stomp the Yard events and said ‘this is great, but we want to also do something to honor seniors,’” Dr. Bishop said.

Since that time Dr. Bernard Bishop Ministries has hosted five Senior Appreciation Days at the church where Dr. Bishop’s mother, Hattie, is the minister, Deliverance Ministry of Jesus Christ.

Saturday another crowd packed the church for this year’s event, listening to the gospel music of The Visionaries, enjoying a free meal and taking part in games, such as Bingo to a “name that tune” game.

Bishop said there will be plenty more activities produced by his ministry in the coming months for not only senior citizens and teenagers, but for every Atmore resident in between.
