The Escambia County High School Blue Devils beat Vigor 64-57 Saturday night to improve to 11-6 on the season.

“I liked the way we controlled the entire game,” said coach Earlando Courtney. “We had a 16-point lead, but we did not put them away. If you let good teams hang around it’ll get you beat.

When you play against quality teams you can’t allow yourselves to give up leads,” he said. “You have to extend the lead. It boils down to getting good shots.”

In action from Friday, the Blue Devils beat area foe UMS-Wright 59-53 to remain a perfect 3-0 in area play. All three of those wins came on the road.

The Blue Devils started the game on an 8-0 run before Vigor was able to pull within three points with 2:24 left in the first quarter.

Vigor was able to cut the lead to one at 15-14 near the start of the second quarter, but ECHS went back up by seven points with less than a minute left in the half.

Junior forward Desmond Williams led all scorers with 16 points in the win. Melik McMillian, a sophomore center, scored 15. Senior guard Fred Knight, the team’s leading scorer for the season, was held to seven.

In action from Friday night, ECHS beat area foe UMS-Wright for its third-straight road area win. The win keeps the Blue Devils unbeaten in the area at 3-0.

“We actually have a big advantage now,” Courtney said. “It puts us in the driver’s seat. We control our destiny.”

ECHS will travel to Bay Minette to take on rival Baldwin County High School at 6 p.m. Friday. The Blue Devils’ next area game is Tuesday when Clarke County comes to Atmore.
