The Atmore City Council heard a request to vacate a portion of property off Highland Avenue during their regularly scheduled meeting Monday. Code Enforcement Officer Greg Vaughn requested that the council approve his request to vacate a 33 by 150 foot portion of land where Horner Street meets Highland Avenue by separating it from the 66 by 150 foot piece of property now located there. Vaughn said that property would then be put up for sale by the city. A public hearing on the matter will be held Monday, Feb. 11 at 4 p.m. in order to allow for public comments on the plan. In other business, the council:

• Approved the appointment of Shane Hadley to the Atmore Zoning Board.

• Approved resolution 2013-1, changing the name of the Atmore Utilities Board to the West Escambia Utilities Board in an effort for the name to better reflect the area the board serves.
