Both Cougar teams took first in the state in the Alabama Independent Schools Association Division 2 and the strong start this year, including a tie for first for the girls and a second place finish for the boys, can be attributed to some of last year’s success, said coach David Walker.

“The key has really been some of the foundations that were formed last year,” Walker said. “We’ve got good senior leadership, especially with the boys and a state championship junior high team that are coming up as well.”

The Cougars’ Reid Bell placed first in the boys’ varsity shot put competition with a distance of 42 feet, 3 inches. McKayla Spurill took first in the girls’ varsity long jump with a distance of 14.5 feet and Lacie Flowers took second with a distance of 13 feet, 9 inches.

Jake Leachman took first in the boys’ varsity triple jump, J.P. Sawyer took second and Jordan Sasser took third.

Grayson Emmons took second place in varsity girls’ discus, while James Fuqua took first for the boys.

The EA boys took first in the 4X200-meter relay run by Auden Lassitter, Jamie Vaughan, Timothy Finklea and Bell. The boys’ team of Eli Godwin, Ryan Johnson, Walt Steele and Tucker Boatwright took first in the  4X800 meter relay, while the girls took second.

EA also won the boys’ 4X100-meter relay with Lassitter, Vaughan, Bell and Gordon Brooks.

EA girls swept hurdles with Spruill, Kaylee Rider and Camryn Godwin taking first, second and third respectively. Maleek Salter got first place in the boys’ high hurdles.

Kaylee Leachman took first in the junior high 100-meter event, while the boys swept the varsity version with Lassitter, Finklea and Brooks taking first, second and third respectively.

Spruill took first place in the girls’ varsity 300-meter hurdles, while the boys swept the junior high version with Darius Brooks, Kainoa Gumapac and Chase Bell taking first, second and third respectively. Salter took first in the boys’ varsity 300-meter hurdles.
