Atmore Cal Ripken League to start April 13

Opening day for Atmore Cal Ripken Baseball is slated for Saturday, April 13, which is about a month earlier than normal.

League Commissioner Murray Johnson said games would start a month earlier this to allow for scheduling of interleague games against teams in Norwest Florida.

The opening day festivities at Tom Byrne Park will include remarks from Mayor Jim Staff as well as recognition of team sponsors, managers and players,

Johnson said. The festivities will begin at 9 a.m. with games for all ages beginning at 9:30.

The league will consist of nine tee-ball teams, five 8-and-under teams, two 10-and-under teams and two 12-and-under teams.

The Poarch Band of Creek Indians will have teams as part of the Atmore league. Trina Rackard is the board member that has helped coordinate that, Johnson said.

The Tri-County League with teams from Century, Jay and Fidelis, Fla. has three 12-and-under teams, two 10-and-under teams and four 8-and-under teams.

The Tri-County league president is Rusty Steele.

The Northwest Escambia League has one team in each age group. Pam Brown is president.
