A Brewton Elementary School kindergarten student was killed this morning when the car in which she was riding ran off the road and overturned on Alabama Highway 41.

State troopers said Alexis Pugh, 6, was in a 1996 GMC Jimmy driven by her mother, Lisa Hart, 27, of Brewton, who was injured along with passenger Christopher Dean, 31, of Repton, troopers said. Hart and Dean were taken to D.W. McMillan Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Troopers said the investigation continues, but they said speed appeared to be a factor in the crash. Troopers also said seat belts were not in use.

Brewton Elementary School Principal Anne Lambert said the school community is mourning Alexis.

“She was a sweet child that enjoyed school and she will be fondly remembered,” Lambert said. “We will miss her. Our hearts are full for her family and those that loved her.”
