Market in the Park event postponed

The Market in the Park event scheduled to take place this month will be postponed according to Sheryl Vickery, executive director of the Atmore Area Chamber of Commerce, which sponsors and organizes the events.

Vickery said the event, which would have been held this weekend, had to be pushed back because of  a lack of produce available for the date.

“We just haven’t been able to get the amount of produce we wanted for the first event,” Vickery said. “We want to do it right and we didn’t want people and the farmers coming out and not having anything to buy and sell.”

The Market in the Park events, which have been held over the past several summers, are geared at providing an avenue of sale for local farmers growing produce or making other goods, such as jellies, jams and syrups.

Vickery said although May’s Market in the Park event did not pan out, she is expecting everything to come together for events in June, July and August.

“If we’re going to do it, we want to do it right,” Vickery said. “Hopefully everything will come together fine for the others.”
Demonstrations from local farmers and plenty of activities to occupy the children are also a big part of the Market in the Park event.
