The Escambia County High School Blue Devils’ basketball team won a game and lost two in a play date Tuesday in Robertsdale.

The Class 4A Blue Devils showed some improvement in a win over 5A Spanish Fort and losses to 6A Theodore and Daphne, said coach Earlando Courtney.

“All in all it was a pretty good day,” Courtney said. “We have to play better as a team though.”

He said the team could no longer rely on players, like Tyrell Ford and Fred Knight where “you give them the ball and get out of the way.”

“This year, every man needs to do his part,” Courtney said.

He said the team, which was one game short of a championship berth last season, has the personnel to go even further in the playoffs next season then they did then.

“I think we can go farther,” Courtney said. “We have all the pieces. Every man has to do his job.”

One key to last season’s success was the emergence of Desmond Williams as a primetime player. Williams, who dominated the post last season, didn’t play in the practice and Courtney expects to use the 6-foot-5-inch rising senior differently next season.

Because of attention from college scouts, Courtney would like to move Williams to the wing as either a two guard or small forward.

“If I’m in a pinch and the game is tight I can move him back to the post,” he said. “The overall goal is to get him to the next level.”

In order to feel completely comfortable with the move, Courtney will need to see more intensity from post players on the team. He said they are making improvements, but need more time at the positions.

“We don’t have consistent, good habits (in the post),” he said. “We’ll be doing more drills this summer and focusing on the small stuff.”

The Blue Devils have another play date on Tuesday in Enterprise.
