Escambia County High School softball coach Daryl Otwell resigned from his post Monday to take teaching and coaching positions in Elmore County.

Otwell leaves after three years with the Lady Blue Devils. Under his leadership the team made its first ever regional appearance, had it’s first ever 20-win season and won the county tournament for the first time.

“We did a lot of great things while I was there,” Otwell said. “We had a lot of great achievements.”

Otwell will become an assistant softball and football coach at Holtville High School and teach at the middle school. He said his wife’s family is from Wetumpka, so the move was a career decision as well as family one.

“It was such a great opportunity I couldn’t pass it up,” he said.

As for who he’d like to see replace him after the Devils’ 18-win season, Otwell said assistant coach Jessica Adams would be a good fit.

“She’ll be a frontrunner,” he said.
