At a time when most young men are thinking about getting a driver’s license, Northview rising junior Trevor Mathis had more on his mind.

Mathis was diagnosed with cancer near the end of the last school year and started treatment just one day after his sixteenth birthday.

“He’s stayed so positive throughout the whole thing,” said family friend Candy Thornton, who along with her husband Chris and cousin Robin Cofield are planning a benefit coed softball tournament to defray the cost of medical bills for the teen’s family.

Cofield got the idea to help and enlisted the Thorntons because they play on a coed softball team, Candy Thornton said.

The double-elimination tournament is set for Saturday, Aug. 10 at Showalter Park in Century. The registration fee per team is $150 and the pitch count is 1/1.

Candy Thornton said five or six teams have already signed up, but the group would like to have 12 teams for the tournament.

In addition a Facebook page has been setup to document Trevor’s progress called “Fight to Win” DTM.
