Escambia County (Fla.) deputies remain on the lookout for one of two pit bulls that attacked a woman Thursday morning in the 8000 block of Jake’s Road in Nokomis.

Sandra Lambert, 63, was walking with the two dogs she had taken in as strays when they attacked her just before 6 a.m., said ECSO Spokeswoman Sena Maddison.

“She was walking with them and going to check on some chickens,” Maddison said.

Maddison wouldn’t comment on the extent of the injuries, except to say they were bad enough to result in the woman being airlifted to USA Medical Center in Mobile.

Another pit bull, “which had been in the family for years” was killed in the attack when it tried to intervene and protect the woman, a ECSO statement read.

One dog was detained, but the office had received no calls on the location of the runaway dog as of 10:30 a.m., Maddison said.

The dog is described as a medium-sized black and brown brindle pit bull. The ECSO warns that if the dog is spotted in either Florida or Alabama, do not approach it. Anyone who has spotted the dog is urged to call the ECSO at 850-436-9620, or animal control at 850-595-3075.
