The National Weather Service has released a hard freeze warning, which will be in effect for Escambia County, Ala., from 1 a.m. to 8 a.m. Thursday.

According to the NWS, a hard freeze warning means that temperatures are expected to fall to around 20 degrees Fahrenheit or lower tonight, and into Thanksgiving morning. These temperatures could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation, and cause exposed water pipes to burst.

The hard freeze can also be harmless to pets left outside, as well as livestock. Also, make plans to check on elderly neighbors to be sure they have adequate heating.

The NWS says that everyone should take adequate safety precautions with their heating systems, and make sure to utilize carbon monoxide detectors in enclosed spaces. Extra caution should be used with portable space heaters. Be sure that space heaters are not left unattended and are not used near flammable materials, such as curtains or bed coverings.
