Low interest in YMCA sports so far

The interest for youth basketball and indoor soccer at the Atmore Area YMCA has been less than expected.

CEO Paul Chason said only six kids have registered for youth basketball as of last Friday and this Friday’s deadline won’t be extended.

“We’ve been running this for almost six weeks,” he said. “If we don’t get enough people, we’ll cancel it.”

The registration period began early last month. The fee for YMCA members is $30 and $40 for non-members. Age groups for the league include: 6-to-8, 9-and-10 and 11-and-12, Chason said. The league is scheduled to run simultaneously with a four-on-four adult league.

Games will be played on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6 p.m.

Indoor soccer signups are only slightly better with 10 kids registered. The YMCA must get 35 kids registered in order to have a league, Chason said.

The deadline to sign up for soccer has been extended to Saturday, with practice beginning on Friday, Jan. 17.

Chason said he was “disappointed” by the lack of interest in youth sports, adding that a factor in it could be there’s no scholarship money available.

“There’s no money available to offset costs,” he said. “Unfortunately, we don’t have grants in order to offer reduced fees.”
