ECHS moving to Class 5APublished 11:42am Wednesday, January 22, 2014
Escambia County High School could spend the next two years playing opponents in Class 5A, according to a realignment released Wednesday morning by the Alabama High School Athletic Association.
ECHS had been in Class 4A, but a move was necessary after the AHSAA decided to add a new “Class 7A” to the old six-classification system.
ECHS’s football team will compete in Class 5A, Region 1. Its opponents will be B.C. Rain, Faith Academy, Jackson, Saint Paul’s Episcopal, Vigor and Williamson. None of these teams were in ECHS’s region the last two years, and only Faith Academy was on the Blue Devils’ 2013 schedule.
There are 61 teams in the state’s new Class 5A. Several of ECHS’s previous Class 4A, Region 1, opponents remained in Class 4A, including Andalusia, Clarke County, Monroe County, Thomasville and UMS-Wright.
Hillcrest-Evergreen fell from Class 4A to Class 3A. Wilcox Central is joining ECHS in Class 5A, but will compete in Region 4.
W.S. Neal will play in Class 4A, Region 1; T.R. Miller will be in Class 3A, Region 1; and Flomaton will compete in Class 2A, Region 1.
