At the age of 90, George Mosby passed away Wednesday evening at Atmore Community Hospital.
Known simply as “Coach George,” Mosby served as head coach for the football team at Escambia County Training School during the 1950s. He also served as the driver’s education instructor at Flomaton High School during his career as an educator.
Atmore City Council member Cornell “Coach” Torrence was an assistant on several of Mosby’s coaching staffs. He said that Mosby will truly be missed by the community.
“He was the kind of person who always wanted to help people,” Torrence said.
Torrence said that Mosby also worked at the swimming pool for about 25 years, and was one of the founding members of the community organization, the Progressive Civic Recreational Club.
“I’ve never met a finer person in my life,” Torrence said.
