Lana Langford, shown singing the anthem at the VFW’s car show earlier this year, will also sing the song Saturday at 9 a.m. at Heritage Park in celebration of Flag Day.

There will be fruits, friends and flags at Heritage Park this Saturday, as the Atmore Area Chamber of Commerce hosts its first “Market in the Park” event.

The market will be open from 7:30 a.m. until 11 a.m., where vendors will sell a variety of crops including fresh fruit and vegetables. Chamber Executive Director Sheryl Vickery noted that this year’s Market in the Park events will be held at Heritage Park, and not at the previous location.

Saturday is also Flag Day, and 2014 is the 200th anniversary of the writing of “Defence of Fort McHenry,” the Francis Scott Key poem that later became the lyrics for the national anthem. In celebration of this anniversary, there will be a special ceremony held at 9 a.m., also at Heritage Park.

Lana Langford will sing the national anthem, and all citizens are encouraged to come out and join in the patriotic singing.

The Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., is promoting “Raise It Up! Anthem for America,” in connection with the anthem’s 200th anniversary. Saturday, all across the nation, various communities will join together to sing the national anthem and remember this important piece of history.

Atmore will join in the nation-wide celebration at 9 a.m., and the large flag will be flown from the Atmore Fire Department ladder truck.

Concerned Citizens of Atmore spearheaded the effort to join in the rest of the country in remembering The Star Spangled Banner.

The next two Market in the Park events will be July 12, and Aug. 9. Vickery said that some produce varieties may not yet be in season Saturday, but will likely be available at future markets.
