Walmart opens Wednesday

After almost nine months of construction and preparation, Atmore’s new Walmart will officially open its doors Wednesday, Aug. 6.

The store will open at 7:30 a.m. for a special opening ceremony and ribbon cutting. Store manager Joe Ferguson said he did not expect the ceremony to be a long one, and customers will be able to start shopping immediately at its conclusion.

“I can’t imagine the ceremony will go any later than 7:45 a.m., and then we’ll be open for our customers,” Ferguson said Tuesday afternoon.

The 70,000-square-foot retail store is located off North Main Street, just south of Oak Hill Cemetery. There is a turning lane for north-bound traffic, and a deceleration lane for south-bound traffic. There is no traffic light or caution light at the intersection.
Roads crews from the Alabama Department of Transportation have been widening the highway for the last several months, but Ferguson said everything should be ready by the time Walmart opens.

“I came in (Tuesday) morning and they looked like they were moving the last few cones off the road,” he said.

The store will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and is providing about 150 jobs. Construction began in mid-December and most of the main building was completed by late June.

Ferguson said the store’s employees have worked very hard in preparation of Wednesday’s opening.

“I’ve incredibly proud of our associates and management team,” he said. “They’ve put in long hours and a lot of hard work for the past few weeks.

“Atmore’s got a beautiful Walmart and we’re excited to show it off.”
