EA’s win Friday was historic

Congratulations to the Escambia Academy Cougars for their win over visiting Monroe Academy on Friday night. How historic was that win? Here’s just a few reasons why it was so impressive, courtesy of the Alabama High School Football History website.

Before Friday, EA’s most recent win over Monroe Academy was in 1998, when the Cougars won 36-28. That Volunteers team finished with a record of 3-7. Thanks to Friday night’s win, EA now holds a record of 5-31-1 in the rivalry.

Before Friday, EA had lost 14 games in a row to the Volunteers.

EA’s win not only snapped Monroe Academy’s winning streak at 19 games, but it also prevented the Volunteers from tying their school’s record winning streak. Monroe Academy won 20 games in a row from Sept. 4, 1970, through Oct. 22, 1971. And guess who broke that streak? That’s right, it was EA, with an 8-8 tie on Oct. 29, 1971.

The Cougars’ win also broke a streak of 36 consecutive region wins for Monroe Academy. Before Friday, the Volunteers’ last region loss was on Oct. 19, 2007, against Faith Academy.

EA’s win Friday gave the Cougars a 5-0 start for the season. EA has started 5-0 only one other time in the program’s history. That was a 5-0 start in the 1971 season, which was EA’s first season to field a team (that 1971 team won its first seven games before tying Monroe Academy). That team finished the year with a 10-1-1 record. Only one other team in EA’s history has won at least 10 games — last year’s 2013 team, which finished with a record of 10-3.

No matter how you look at it, EA’s win over Monroe Academy on Friday was one for the history books. Good luck to the Cougars during the rest of the season.
