Chiefs’ season ends in playoffs

The Northview High School Chiefs’ football season came to an end Friday, as they lost at Vernon 36-19 in the Region 1-1A semifinal game.

The Yellow Jackets finished with 258 rushing yards, and were led by D’Vonta O’Neal and Darrius Peterson, who combined for five touchdowns in the victory.

Vernon jumped on the board first after a 6-yard touchdown run at the end of its first possession. The Chiefs responded when Cameron Newsome caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Gavin Grant. Northview took the lead, 7-6, after adding the extra point with 1:54 remaining in the first quarter.

Vernon regained the lead after a short touchdown run and the two-point conversion, with 10:58 left in the second quarter. The Chiefs came close to tying the game late in the half, but their scoring play was nullified by a penalty.

Northview trailed 14-7 at halftime before the Yellow Jackets’ offense got going. Vernon scored three unanswered touchdowns before Northview could respond.

Grant finished with three touchdowns and finished with 191 passing yards on 22-of-45 attempts. Newsome had two touchdown catches.

Northview finished the season with a 7-3 record. Vernon advanced to play Baker, who defeated Graceville 21-7 on Friday night.
