ECHS boys, girls open with wins

Both the Escambia County Lady Blue Devils and varsity Blue Devils began defense of their Escambia County Tournament titles with wins over the W.S. Neal Eagles.

The Lady Blue Devils, who won the 2013 championship, defeated WSN 50-33 while the varsity Blue Devils took down WSN 75-56. Atmore’s boys have won the last six county championships.

This year’s county tournament is at T.R. Miller High School in Brewton.

In Friday’s games, the ECHS girls will play Flomaton at 3 p.m., and the ECHS boys will play Flomaton at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, the ECHS girls will play T.R. Miller at 6 p.m. and the ECHS boys will play T.R. Miller at 7:30 p.m.

ECHS girls 50, WSN girls 33

ECHS’ Ja’Quanda Webster poured in 20 points and Jade Adams had 10 as the Lady Blue Devils pulled away from WSN in the second half to earn a 50-33 win.

ECHS (5-2) led WSN 16-7 after one quarter and 27-21 at the half after WSN outscored ECHS 14-11 in the quarter. In the third quarter, the Lady Devils used runs of 6-0 and 7-0 to double up WSN 16-8 in the quarter to grab a 43-29 lead heading into the fourth.

In the fourth, ECHS ended the game on a 7-4 run to help them in the 17-point win.

Alexis Morrison led WSN with nine points while Marishia Fraser and KeKe Floyd both had eight points in the loss.

ECHS boys 75, WSN boys 56

Having four players score in double figures Thursday night was not enough for the WSN varsity boys against ECHS as the Blue Devils downed WSN by 20 points, 75-56.

ECHS (6-5) led WSN 23-19 after one quarter and 45-31 at the half after holding a 22-12 scoring advantage in the second quarter.

In the third quarter, ECHS edged out WSN 12-10 to take a 57-41 lead into the fourth quarter. In the fourth, ECHS outscored WSN 18-15.
