Thanks to everyone for defeating landfill

Dear Neighbor,

On behalf of the Town of Repton, THANK YOU to all those who gave time, talent, persistence, unity and money to help defeat the largest landfill in the U.S. from being built in our region! A landfill that originally wanted to be permitted for 48 states!

A few days ago back in 2006 marks the eighth anniversary of that important phone call from Greg Albritton, now a Senator, alerting me of the dump situation. We immediately contacted the sitting Conecuh County Commission, at that time, to inquire of what was transpiring. Of course, they had “no” knowledge of “anything”! Approximately Dec. 11 will mark the eighth anniversary since the real estate agent representing Conecuh Woods dump contacted me to convince us how wonderful “garbage” would be. And, so it all began. While it has been a long, frustrating and stressful eight years, it has also been one of the greatest events in our lives! Why? Because everyone stood united! They couldn’t divide us! I love Christmas for this very reason! The gift of Divine Intervention!

In the beginning of October, we started a campaign to pay off the remaining legal fee debt ($63,000). The town’s total cost for defeating the dump was approximately $639,000. Because of kind, caring and generous individuals, we now only owe $48,000 (as of Nov. 30). If we can raise approximately $33,000 by the end of the year, Balch & Bingham Law Firm will forgive the last $15,000.

I address everyone as “neighbor,” because no matter where we live our actions affect each other! The town of Repton had no way of fighting back without our “neighbors” help! If you haven’t donated, I am asking for your help in doing so to retire the debt before Christmas. Anyone can help by donating to the Repton Restoration Society, Inc (501(c)(3)), P.O. Box 322, Repton, AL 36475 (tax-deductible donations) or by making your check payable directly to Balch & Bingham (not tax-deductible).

For questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at (251) 714-4445.

Thank you, God bless and Merry Christmas!

Mayor, Town of Repton
