2 teens killed in U.S. 31 crash

Two teenagers from Monroe County were killed Saturday evening, in a single-vehicle car crash in northeastern Baldwin County.

According to information from Trooper Kevin Cook of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, the accident took place at approximately 10 p.m. on U.S. Highway 31 at the 31.1-mile marker, about nine miles north of Bay Minette and near the Dyas Creek crossing. A 2013 Nissan Maxima with four passengers reportedly left the roadway and struck a sign and utility pole.

One of the passengers, 17-year-old Allison B. McKinley of Monroeville, was ejected from the vehicle and later pronounced dead at North Baldwin Infirmary. Another passenger, 16-year-old Matthew H. “Holden” Hinote of Excel, was critically injured in the crash and eventually died from his injuries at 4:34 a.m. Sunday, at USA Hospital in Mobile.

The driver, 24-year-old Justin J. Johnson of Monroeville, and
another passenger were also injured and transported to area hospitals.

McKinley, a student at Excel High School, was Hinote’s girlfriend.

No seat belts were in use during the crash. The accident remains under investigation by ALEA State Troopers.
