According to a report from the Atmore Police Department, Sherryl America, 57, of Atmore, was transported to Atmore Community Hospital by Atmore Ambulance. The driver of the second vehicle, Walter Franklin, 46, of Atmore, was not badly hurt.

According to the APD report, Franklin was driving his 2002 Saturn east on Carver Avenue and slowed down to turn left onto Park Drive. America was driving her 2010 Ford Explorer and traveling east behind Franklin.

America reportedly misjudged the stopping distance and tried to pass Franklin. In doing so, Franklin’s vehicle was struck on the left side, causing America to lose control through a yard, the APD report states.

America’s vehicle damaged two mailboxes before coming back across Carver Avenue, traveling through a driveway in the 200 block of Carver Avenue, and hitting a tree and parked car.

Franklin’s vehicle was not towed, but was damaged on the driver’s side.
