Interstate 65 traffic is moving Friday morning following a late afternoon wreck Thursday that killed one and injured six.

Trooper Jamie L. Maloy with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Public Information and Education Unit said that as of 4:36 a.m. Friday morning, I-65 northbound has reopened.

“ALDOT has blocked of about half mile of the outside lane just south of exit 69,” Maloy said. “Cautionary signs are up and traffic is moving.”

Thursday’s wreck occurred just before 5 p.m. near the 69 mile marker.

Initial reports indicate that at least one of the vehicles involved was an 18-wheeler and multiple other vehicles that caught on fire. There were reports of entrapment as emergency personnel were dispatched from Brewton, Flomaton, Century, Fla., and many other agencies.

Chief Deputy Mike Lambert said six people were transported from the scene to various hospitals, while three were air lifted.

“It was a mixture of passenger cars and a loaded 18-wheeler,” Lambert said. “Luckily, nothing was hazardous in the cargo.”

No further information has been released yet, as Alabama State Troopers are continuing their investigation.
