GECA musical was a delight

This past Thursday through Sunday, I was privileged to be a member of the cast of the Greater Escambia Council of the Arts (GECA)’s production of Godspell.
For those of you who didn’t get a chance to see it, you missed a great show. And I’m not just saying that because I was in the performance. Every one of the 10 cast members did a great job.

And of course, there were countless other volunteers including stage crew, musicians, sound-and-lighting crew, ushers, ticket takers and many more, who helped make the production run smoothly.

I have been to several GECA productions since moving to Atmore, but this was the first one where I joined the cast. I performed in Two by Two in Andalusia, and Oliver! and Annie in Bainbridge, Ga., and have always loved Broadway and singing.

I definitely appreciate all of the audience members who came out to see the show, and who supported all of the work that we have done for eight weeks. There have been many nights of rehearsals, constantly re-performing the same scene or song over and over again until we could do it in our sleep.

I also really enjoyed getting the chance to know my fellow cast members. Every one of them brought their unique talents and abilities to make the performance a strong one. We had great comedians, great singers, great actors, great dancers, and — most importantly — devoted Christians who truly gave this musical maximum effort.

Finally, I am just truly thankful that GECA exists. In this world, it seems like the fine arts often gets short shrift. I am thrilled that there is such a vibrant arts community here in Atmore, filled with countless citizens who give so much effort, time, and money to make sure that these plays and musicals are second-to-none.

Godspell was my first GECA production, but I hope it won’t be my last. And even if I’m not performing, you can bet I’ll be there watching from the audience. I’ll see you next time, at the theater!
