Atmore Code Enforcement Officer Greg Vaughn said that progress is continuing in the clean-up and demolition process of two businesses that were badly damaged by fires.

Vaughn told the Atmore Industrial Development Board on Thursday that demolition is continuing at the Southland Motel, which was destroyed in a fire in December 2013.

He said demolition is probably “85 percent complete” and should be done by mid-July. He said that the hotel owners will then pressure wash the foundation and be ready for the construction phase.

Vaughn also said that Keith Hess, owner of the building that once housed The Parish Grill restaurant on South Main Street, is still cleaning up the structure. The building was damaged in a fire in October 2014.

“His short-term intentions are to remove the two lean-tos on the second floor,” Vaughn said. “And at some point in time, tear off the back wooden structure. His long-term intentions are to set it up to make a business out of it.”
