Escambia Academy spread the ball around on offense, and it worked as the Cougars shut out Glenwood 41-0 tonight on senior night.

“It’s great to get a shutout on senior night,” Cougars head football coach Hugh Fountain said. “We knew it was going to be a tougher game this year than it was last year playing them. We just kind of kept plugging tonight. I was proud of them for their efforts. We played hard.”

EA led 21-0 at halftime, and punched the ball in midway through the third quarter on a 10-yard rush from Trey Turner. Turner added another touchdown run as time expired in the quarter to give his team a healthy 34-0 advantage.

Fountain said Turner did some good things for the Cougars in the second half.

“We did a pretty good job of spreading the ball around tonight,” he said. “Our throws have been better for us, recently. The option football was good for us tonight. We know we can do it.”

On Glenwood’s next possession, the Gators fumbled the ball, and Escambia Academy’s Fred Flavors recovered for a touchdown at the start of the fourth quarter.

The rest of the game saw the Cougars’ second string get some much-needed playing time.

Next week, EA has a short week as it travels to play Bessemer Academy on Thursday.

Last year, the Cougars went 1-1 with BA, losing 32-14 in the regular-season closer, but winning 35-28 in the AISA Class 3A state championship game.

“We know that Bessemer’s good,” Fountain said. “You always get excited to play a team from another region because you don’t play them all the time.

“We have a lot of respect for Bessemer because we played Bessemer in the state championship game last year,” he said. “We know they got a good football team. We’ve got a short week, and we’ve got to get prepared for them.”

After the Cougars’ final game of the regular season, they will travel to play Lee-Scott in the first round of the playoffs.
