United Fund of Atmore’s Sundown Slammer fundraising event Nov. 17 was a huge success, organizers said.

The local organization, which raises money for different entities in Atmore, held the revamped event at Heritage Park. Participants, or inmates, had to raise $1,000 in bail money. Those who were a little short set up tables at the park, asking for donations.

UF of Atmore President Jordan Barnett said because of the fundraiser, United Fund is just shy of its budgeted goal for the year.

“We enjoyed having the event after hours to better accommodate our participants, and allow the community as a whole to be involved,” Barnett said. “I think that was a key factor in our success. We look forward to the growth of this event next year.”

At present, UF raised more than $13,000 from the slammer event. More money is expected to trickle in, organizers said.

United Fund’s fundraising goal for the year is $30,000.
