A single-vehicle crash claimed two lives and injured another on Interstate 65 near the 62-mile marker on Feb. 20, according to Alabama State Troopers.

Trooper Kevin Cook said the crash occurred at 2:35 p.m., and that Eugene Sanders Jr., 53, and Samuel Louis Brown, 34, both of Mobile, were killed when the 2003 Mitsubishi SUV, in which they were passengers, left the roadway and overturned several times.

Cook said Brown, who was not using his seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. Sanders was also pronounced dead at the scene.

“The driver of the Mitsubishi was transported to a local hospital for treatment of their injuries,” Cook said.

The crash occurred eight miles north of Atmore.

Lifeflight out of Baldwin County, landed in the middle of the northbound lanes of the interstate to pick up the injured in the wreck, where traffic came to a stand still.

Once the helicopter took off around 3:45 p.m., traffic started moving slowly.

Troopers continue to investigate the crash.
