EA routes First Baptist 38-10 in SECIS classic

MONTGOMERY ­— Third-ranked Escambia Academy beat First Baptist School 38-10 in the last and late-night game of the Southeastern Commission of Independent Schools’ Kickoff Classic on Saturday night.

This was the second time that EA had played in the classic. The Cougars beat the Charleston school last year in the first of the twinbill.

Seniors Neikel Robinson and Fred Flavors accounted for two touchdowns each for EA in the victory. Robinson grabbed two interceptions on defense.

EA head football coach Hugh Fountain said he was pleased overall with the Cougars’ effort.

After only leading 20-10 at halftime, the Cougars stepped their game up in a physical and running way.

Fountain said Flavors, who scored both of his touchdowns in the third quarter, was a nice adjustment for the team.

Additionally, Fountain said Robinson did a good job as well.

“This is a fun thing to do, come up here and play,” he said as the clock struck past midnight. “I hate that it’s 12 o’clock at night. We’ve got to go to church tomorrow.

“I was proud of our effort,” he said.

Below is a quarter-by-quarter breakdown on both teams’ scoring:

 

First Quarter

• EA junior quarterback Jabe Dawe threw a 20-yard pass to Robinson with 2:58 (6-0 and after a turnover)

• EA senior running back Louie Turner ran it in 2 yards with 1:21 (12-0)

 

Second Quarter

• FBS recovered a fumble in the end zone for a safety with 8:59 (12-2)

• Dawe scrambled and found Robinson for a 56-yard touchdown pass with 2:36, and Turner punched the 2-point conversion in (20-2)

• First Baptist’s Tremez Brown connected with Tylan Major with 2 seconds left (20-10 at halftime)

 

Third Quarter

• Dawe to Flavors on a 38-yard touchdown pass with 11:37 (26-10)

• Flavors rushed 13 yards for a touchdown with 5:08 (32-10)

 

Fourth Quarter

• Dawe connected with junior receiver Jace Daniels for a 13-yard touchdown pass with 2:57 left (38-10)

 

EA visits Abbeville Christian next week.
