The Escambia Academy Lady Cougars junior varsity team lost its first game 33-22 to Sparta Academy Monday night.

The Lady Cougars (2-1) fell behind early and were never able to catch the Warriors after falling behind 13-7 in the first quarter.

Lady Cougar Lacie Flowers led the scoring attack in the first quarter with four points, and continued to lead the EA finishing with eight points.

Head coach Larry Bonds said falling behind was bound to happen due to the youth of the Lady Cougars.

“Our youth and inexperience showed against the Sparta, which is probably one of the best teams in the state,” Bonds said. “We made some mistakes and missed a couple of easy baskets that allowed them to jump out to an early lead.”

In the second quarter, the Lady Cougars were able to keep up only being outscored 7-6, and going into halftime down 20-13.

Flowers scored two points in the quarter for the Lady Cougars, and received help from Grayson Emmons and Allie Brooks who each scored two points.

Emmons finished the game against the Lady Warriors with four points, while Brooks finished with three. All three of Brooks’ points came off of free throws, with her hitting 3-of-5.

Bonds said he sees a lot of good things in store for his team because of the attitude they played the game with.

“One thing we learned about our team is they have a ton of potential,” Bonds said. “They played with winning in mind, and while they were not able to do it I believe they will win a lot of games.”

The third quarter saw the Lady Cougars fall further behind to the Lady Warriors by allowing six points and only putting up two. Flowers scored the only points of the quarter for EA.

In the final quarter, the Lady Cougars tightened up their defense, and played Sparta to a 7-7 tie, and a 33-22 final.

Bonds said that he was proud of the effort put forth against Sparta. He added that his team is a long way from being a great team, but will continue to push for that.

“I was proud of my team in the loss to Sparta as strange as that sounds,” Bonds said. I was as proud of them in that game as I was in the two victories. We are long way from being great, but who knows what will happen if they continue to work hard.”

Central (Fla.) 12

The Lady Cougars were led by Grayson Emmons who scored 12 points on the night. Supporting Emmons performance were Paige Allen with seven points, Peyton Snider netting seven points and Lacie Flowers with six.

Head coach Larry Bonds said his team did a good job of taking control of the game early, which led to the win.

“Central was a good team that matched up well with us,” Bonds said. “We took control of the game early on, and once we reached the second half we never looked back.”

Page Lancaster and Anna Marie Dobson also chipped in on the scoring for the Lady Cougars. Lancaster had four points and Dobson scored one.
