| Commission votes to lower speed on Deer Creek |

Escambia County Commissioners were busy taking action to keep citizens of the county as safe as possible Monday by posting new speed limits on two county roads.
Escambia County Sheriff Grover Smith said speed on Deer Creek Road near Atmore has been an issue for some time.
“This is a safety issue for walker and joggers in the area,” Smith said. “There are two pretty sharp curves on the road. I appreciate you putting this on the agenda to address today.”
County Engineer Bill Bridges commented on the conditions on Deer Creek Road and suggested changes in the area.
“We certainly need something there,” Bridges said. “It’s my recommendation that we place 30 mile per hour limits on the road and post speed advisories in those two curves at 15 miles per hour.”
Another area of concern brought before the commission was Nelson Road just south of Brewton.
District 4 Commissioner Raymond Wiggins said the area is also in need of having speed problems addressed.
“I have gotten requests from citizens who live on the road to have something done about the speed limits there,” Wiggins said. “Bill has looked at the road and I believe we need to make some changes there for the sake of the citizens.”
Bridges recommended speed limits of 25 miles per hour be posted on the roadway with speed advisories placed along two curves in the area as well.
Commissioners approved the changes on both county roads and agreed to follow the recommendations of Bridges. New speed limit and speed advisory signs will be posted in the area soon, Bridges said.
In other business, the commission:
Approved the transfer of a retail beer and table wine license from Kangaroo Express to Pantry Inc. Pantry, Inc. recently purchased the business located on Wallace Road at I-65. The license was a transfer only for the business.
Approved an agreement with the Alabama Emergency Management Agency to accept funding to help cover costs of operation at the Escambia County Emergency Management Agency;
Approved an agreement to serve as a Goodwill Easter Seals host agency for the employment of an assistant at the county EMA offices at no cost to the county;
Approved a memorandum of understanding with Poarch Creek Indians concerning the resurfacing of St. Anna Drive and Lynn McGhee Drive. Both roads are located on tribal lands but are owned and maintained by the county. PCI officials have agreed to resurface the roads at their expense with no cost to the county;
Approved the errors, insolvents and litigations list submitted by Escambia County Tax Collector Joy Wiggins. “This is a rubber stamp on what Mrs. Wiggins gives us,” Chairman David Stokes said. “These are just errors in tax amounts that are being corrected and any insolvencies or litigations. Most of what we see on this report is a correction of errors.” County Attorney Thad Moore said the list is customary and should be approved.
