Atmore merchants are hoping shoppers will get a sense of d/jˆ vu next week — and will take the opportunity to visit downtown shops.

The Atmore Chamber of Commerce is again inviting the public to come to downtown Atmore to see what they may be missing.

D/j‡ vu Vintage Walk, to be held from 5 until 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 5, is the second of three events planned by the chamber to get people to come to the downtown area to shop and have a good time. The first event, which was held last month, was an art walk with various artists showing their paintings and other art works.

“We will have antiques, collectibles, arts and many other things on display this time in the downtown area,” said Cheryl Vickery, director of the chamber. “The participating businesses in the event will have various collections on display as well as having people dressed in period costume. We will run the shuttle service just like we did for the Art Walk. People won't have to worry about finding a parking place.”

Businesses still have time to join this walk down memory lane by displaying a treasured collection or antique (before 1959) in their store. The chamber is also inviting those merchants who do not have a business downtown to take this opportunity to display vintage items along the sidewalks in downtown.

Vickery said they invite anyone who has a collection of unique items, a family antique or just a collectible item, to come on down and join in this event.

Chamber member Cathy Coley said anyone interested in displaying their items will be welcome.

“Right now we have more than 20 merchants who are working with us on the antiques, collections and art work,” Coley said. “We have coin collections, hat boxes, antique farm tools, old pictures, scrapbooks and business machines. We also want to issue a welcome to any downtown merchants to have displays inside and outside at their stores. Citizens are asked to bring anything they have of interest, to be put on display. Such things as dolls, bottles, knife collections and of course the artists will be a big part of this day too. All antiques should be nicely displayed with an information sheet or board, telling about the items, and more than 50 years old.”

Buck Powell will have his vintage Harley-Davidson motorcycle on display.

"My uncle bought it new in 1953, when I was in junior high school," Powell said. "Then in 1954, my dad bought it from him. It's big and I was just a skinny little kid at the time, so you can imagine what I looked like on it. It's not the only motorcycle that I have now, but it is still in good condition. I have kept it up all these years. I was asked to put it into the vintage show and I am happy to do it."

There are several Downtown Committee members who can answer any questions about the items: Tracy Miller (Jus Because), Frances Dunn (Earle's Jewelers), Carl Anderson (The Tot Shop), Joel Lambert (Roaster's Gallery), Leigh Anne Russell-Jones (United Bank), Stephen Van Pelt (First National Bank and Trust, or Cathy Coley (Coley Petals and Parties).

“The October Art Walk was a huge success,” said Shelly Williams, office manager for the Chamber of Commerce. “We want everyone to join together to make November's D/j‡ Vu Vintage Walk even better. This is a great way to showcase the downtown area and our community.”

Vickery said she expects the event to give people a chance to reminisce.

“This is a stroll down memory lane,” she said. “People can walk around and see the items on display and then reminisce. There will certainly be something in one of the displays that will make you remember something from your past or your childhood. It will be a good time for all and you might just learn something about your downtown area of Atmore.”
