Atmore dentist found dead Saturday
Staff Reports
Deputies with the Escambia County Sheriff's Office discovered Atmore dentist Thomas Alvin Rice Jr., DMD, dead at his home late Saturday afternoon.
According to investigators, Rice died from a gunshot wound, and was found inside his Nokomis residence located off Hwy. 31.
Rice was a 1982 graduate of the University of Alabama and has practiced dentistry at 111 E. Ridgeley Street in Atmore for several years.
Rice's death is still under investigation as autopsy results are awaited from the Alabama Department of Forensic Science in Mobile.

" I never knew Dr. Rice but I know someone who loved him very much and always will. He 's going to be greatly missed and will always be loved. I'm sorry his family is suffering and hope the truth of his death will put the murderer in jail for life. GOD BLESS DR. RICE'S FAMILY AND FRIENDS!!!! "

" the love and respect I had for Dr. Rice is un measurable. He loved children and he loved life to take away someone like this is just a cruel injustice to todays society.I would give anything to have him back with us whoever did his God will deal with you and please forgive me for having some hatred towards this person right now. All he wanted to do in this life is to love children and respect everyone in the community. " Dr. Rice did so much that few knew about. He and his staff have done screening in local schools and schools in other counties free. He often treated kids who otherwise would never have been seen. Here was a big man with an even bigger heart. Judy and Sherry and his children, I pray that God will give you the comfort and peace that only He can. I know how much you cared and tried to protect him. He will be missed. "

" tom rice was a good person/dentist/friend.he laughed at me one day,i had lost a filling and got a air pocket in my tooth.he gave me at 9 shots to numb.then he said hold on this will hurt but im right here.he had to drill my tooth all the way down until it hit that air pocket and he did and psw then my hole face was numb for about 2 days,but he was there.he even let me dig my fingernails into his knee.when he was through he said you can let now.some people think hes crazy and we all have a crazy side to us he was himself and he didn't care what other people thought.he was a great dentist a friend someone you could talk to.tom you will be greatly missed as a friend,dentist,father,a mother,father son and a community provider. you will always be in my heart and when i see you in heaven im going to pull out your molar for leaving us.my prayers go out to the rice family and iam so very sorry for your loss.
