To the Editor:
Now is the time for us to enlist Jerry Gehman as Atmore's Citizen of the Year. I'm proud to live in a town that has responded to this leadership. This year's Fourth of July Celebration has formed a single community out of us, giving us unity and solidarity of purpose no other effort has accomplished.
One reason this Independence Day surpassed all of our town's other events – such as Williams Station Day, Mayfest, the Christmas parade – is that commercialism and money-making were not the underlying drive. Pride, honor, gratitude – we glorified in these on the Fourth, thanks to Jerry Gehman.
Against all odds, including the great need of funds, Mr. Gehman launched this celebration for us, just like the rockets and flares of color displayed in the nighttime sky. From now on, let our city council designate a fraction of our city tax income so that we will not have to do without the Fourth of July in the future.
