A noted Atmore educator died at his home Saturday.
Charles Ellsworth Bosenberg, 84, was best known in Atmore as a physical science teacher and principal.
Bosenberg gave Betty Warren her first teaching job in Atmore when she came here in 1970.
Though not a native of Atmore, Bosenberg had lived here for 40 years.
He was born in Carriere, Miss., on Aug. 26, 1915. He moved to DeFuniak Springs, Fla., where he attended Palmer Academy and graduated from Walton High School.
His higher education included East Mississippi Junior College, the University of Florida and Florida State University and the University of West Florida. He held a master's degree in chemistry and physics and did post-graduate work in school administration.
During World War II, Bosenberg served as a meteorologist with the Army Air Force. While serving in Tampa, he helped set up the weather school and was its only instructor. He later taught meteorology at the Air Force Weather School at Chanute Field, Ill.
Bosenberg's teaching career included teaching physics and chemistry at Apopka Memorial High School in Orange County, Fla.; physical and earth science at Augusta Raa Junior High School in Tallahassee; biology at Florida State University; and physical science at Escambia County Junior High School in Atmore.
He also served as principal of division 9-10 at Escambia County High School for nine years and assistant principal of ECHS for two years after the schools were combined.
Bosenberg served his community in many ways. He was a member and past officer of the Atmore Lions Club, former president of the Joy Riders senior citizens group, and advisor for Boy Scout Explorer Post 26. He was a past Master of Pensacola Masonic Lodge 42 and had received a 50-year membership pin.
Bosenberg was an active member of Atmore First Baptist Church, serving as a deacon, choir member, Sunday school teacher and department superintendent, and later as a life deacon.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Velma Carter Bosenberg, and one daughter, Nancy Bosenberg Karrick.
