When I was a child I remember two television events that were must see TV.' The first of those was the broadcast of The Wizard of Oz and the second was The Sound of Music. Both were like annual events for me and my sister and that is why I was so excited to hear about the Atmore Arts Council's presentation of the latter.
The story is that which any person – young or old, rich or poor – can appreciate. There is a sense of adventure and a touch of romance. And the music that progresses the story along are timeless songs that young children still learn in music classes.
Finding a great project isn't easy, especially considering they would be dealing with volunteers only. Apparently, they had a lot of confidence in the talent of Atmore.
Sitting through a run-through last week, I had the unique opportunity to witness the hard work and dedication the cast and crew have toward the project. If they work as hard during every practice as they did that night then I am sure it will be a wonderful production.
The showtimes for the musical are Thursday through Saturday at 7 p.m. and another performance at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Those participating in the play have gone through a lot of long hours to bring this quality program to Atmore and a perfect performance means nothing without an auditorium full of people to applaud it. We should all pack up the family and head to ECHS this weekend , not just to see a great play, but to support the Arts Council and everyone who took part in the production.
One excuse that should not be used is: "I didn't like the movie". After all, Julie Andrews wasn't from Atmore, neither was anyone else in the cast of the mid-60s classic. Perhaps a fresh perspective with familiar faces will change your mind.
And, for those who have seen it and did like it, you can tap your toes and lip-sync all the way through.
