At least one group is disturbed about the recent actions by the Escambia County (Ala.) School Board.
The Coalition of Concerned Citizens, a countywide group, held a meeting Wednesday night to discuss several problems they perceive to be issues that should be faced.
One of the main points was that Escambia County High School would open Friday without a principal and that students would be going to their first day of school without schedules.
There was concern expressed by several of those at the meeting about how students would react to attending school the first day without a principal to oversee the operation.
Though the group made no official plan of action, some did say they were considering keeping their children at home. However, that plan was not encouraged nor endorsed by the coalition during the meeting.
Three members of the board of education were invited to the meeting – Janice Ash, Jimmy Dukes and W.J. Grissett.
Only Grissett accepted the invitation. He assured those in attendance that the school was ready for the students on Friday.
Many of those in attendance were questioning the school board's decision not to hire Dr. Deadra Powe, a candidate for the principal position, who was recommended by Dr. Bradley.
The Rev. Harold Askew said he did not care who they hired, just that it be a quality candidate.
Lillie Johnson, a member of the CCC, said she did not think the BOE's main concern was with the students.
Pritchett, a retired educator himself, agreed.
They are also still seeking an explanation from the board on the termination of Bradley's contract.
As for beginning the school year without a principal, Pritchett urged parents to talk to their kids.
In regard to the continuing search for a superintendent, Pritchett said that "the whole thing is a sham."
