Diversifying economy top job for Shell

Mayor Rodney Owens and Mayor-elect Howard Shell began their transition period Wednesday.
Shell takes office Oct. 2, having defeated Owens in Tuesday's election.
Shell will be joined by three new councilmen – Webb Nall, Jim Staff and Louie Turner III. John Garrard and John Watkins retained their seats on the council.
Shell said his first order of business will be to make himself familiar with the city's finances.
Shell said he's anxious to meet with some of the city's industrial leaders and discuss projects they have on the board.
Shell said he plans to concentrate on recruiting industry for the city.
One concern is how the school system is perceived by industrial prospects.
Work will continue on the ever-present drainage projects.
Voter turnout was low in the city races last week.
Taking ownership in the city is something Shell would like the citizens do.
