This week's contest with Shaw is an important one for the Escambia County Blue Devils. It is the first in a string of area games and a spark could ignite the Chiefs to a roll that could lead to a playoff berth.
Coming into the game 0-2 in the area and still seeking their first win of the year, the Devils will go to Ladd Stadium in Mobile Friday night on a mission to play a full game without mistakes. Head Coach Frankie Bell said his team's best chance to win is if the offense can eliminate tedious mistakes.
Shaw comes into the season with a similar fate as ECHS. They too have lost area games to St. Paul and Williamson and will be looking for their first area win as well.
ECHS is having to play two regular starters due to injuries. Jesse Wolfe, a defensive tackle and center, and Roderick Hines, a defensive tackle and offensive guard, will both miss the game.
Bell said his kicking and defensive teams have been doing a good job this season, but that it is the offense that must step things up.
As far as the Devils are concerned Friday night's game is the beginning of a new season.
Kick off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Ladd Stadium in Mobile.
