Four veteran teachers have transferred to Ernest Ward Middle School this year.
John McDonald has been in education for 22 years. This year, he's the band teacher at EWMS and the music director at First United Methodist Church in Atmore.
He enjoys the choirs and handbells choirs at church, but there's something special about teaching a student to appreciate music.
Susan Ward is starting her 15th year as a teacher. She transferred to EWMS from Bratt Elementary.
Ward teaches gifted classes and girls' physical education.
She said she finds that teaching gifted students still presents a challenge – even gifted students have to be motivated.
Roman Boldyreff teaches seventh and eighth grade science. He has been out of the school system for about three years. During that time, he worked as a teacher on special assignment at Naval Air Station, running the Adventure Flight Deck.
Kim Whitfield is beginning her 18th year in the classroom. She teachers sixth grade social studies and reading.
She taught previously at Jim Allen Elementary in Cantonment.
Another change is the greater number of students Whitfield deals with now. In the elementary school where she taught before, students didn't change classes. Of course, at the middle school level, they do.
