The Flomaton Hurricanes 34-0 victory over the Elba Tigers came to a surprising halt near the end of the third quarter due a severe injury to an Elba player.
Allen Head was helped off the field after he was injured on a reverse. Moments later time was called by the officials and emergency personnel came to the aid of Head, who was on the sideline. He was transported by lifeflight to the hospital and school officials chose to cancel the remainder of the game with 13 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
Flomaton won the toss and deferred to the second half.
The Hurricanes then kicked off to the Elba Tigers. Neither team could establish anything offensively in the first quarter.
The first points of the game came as Flomaton put together a 69-yard drive. Much of the yards came on a Jesse Allgood to Mac McCall 64-yard pass. The drive was capped off by a three-yard run by Shawn Yuhasz. The PAT failed and the Canes led 6-0.
The Hurricane defense then held the Tigers to three downs and out and forced a punt from the Elba 13.
The Canes wasted little time as freshman Brian Wesley scored on a 39-yard run. Shawn Yuhasz then bulled his way into the end zone for the two-point conversion. The Canes led 14-0 at halftime.
During the third quarter, the Canes went right to work. Brian Hastings took the second half kickoff and scampered to the Tiger 37 yard line. However, the 55-yard return was nullified on a clipping penalty. The Canes then set up shop on their own 33-yard line. After moving the ball across mid-field to the Tiger 43, the Canes fumbled.
On the following play, Kenny White forced a Tiger fumble, which was recovered by the Hurricanes.
Brian Hastings then scored on a 30-yard run on the ensuing play. The PAT by McCall was good. With 7:51 remaining in the third quarter, the Canes led 21-0.
On the next series, the Hurricane defense once again held Elba to three plays and a punt. The Canes then put together a seven-play, 35-yard drive. Sophomore Paul Crabtree carried the ball four times for seventeen yards during the drive.
Yuhasz scored from one-yard out. The PAT was no good and, with 3:15 remaining in the third quarter, the Canes led 27-0.
Following a botched kickoff return, Elba began on their own 10-yard line.
The Hurricane defense once again stuffed the Tigers and forced another punt, this time from their own seven-yard line.
McCall returned the punt 25 yards for a Hurricane touchdown. He also added the PAT.
The Canes led 34-0 with 37 seconds remaining in the third period of play.
At this point, time was called to treat the injured player on the sideline. Moments later, the remainder of the game was cancelled.
Flomaton head coach Jerry Carpenter was pleased with his team's efforts.
During the three quarters of play, the Hurricane defense held Elba to three first downs and 56 total yards of offense.
McCall had one reception for 64 yards, a 25-yard punt return for a touchdown and made one of two PATs.
Yuhasz carried the ball 11 times for 39 yards and Wesley had five carries for 69 yards.
The Canes improved to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in regional play. Elba fell to 0-5.
The Canes will travel to Jay, Fla. Friday night to take on the Royals in a big rivalry game. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
